Nelson Vicente – Contact: [email protected] Without a doubt, Friday, July 17, 2026, will occupy a significant place in Uruguay's automotive market due to the official presentation of the renowned Tesla brand, officially landing in our country with two of its models: the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y SUV. On that day, Eng. Andrés Folle, country manager for the Californian brand, made the official presentation of Tesla, which took place at Punta Carretas Shopping, the same location where Tesla's only physical point of sale in Uruguay is situated.

Furthermore, for those who wish to gather more information personally, Tesla has available the aforementioned point of sale located in Punta Carretas Shopping, which, in these first few days, was overwhelmed with interested parties in acquiring one of the models. Regarding the sales of hybrid and electric vehicles, it is evident that our market is increasingly attractive to brands and, logically, more competitive, whether by price, design, equipment, and performance of the different units.
As an example of the growth and notable interest that has been generated and consolidated in recent times, it is enough to point out that last year, in a total market of almost 70,000 units, electric vehicles accounted for 21% of sales with around 14,000 deliveries, while hybrid sales reached 9%, about 6,000 units. And in the first half of 2026, 12,500 100% electric vehicles and 5,000 hybrids were already sold, so the market is on its way to setting another record. And another aspect to highlight is that, for the first time in our country in May, sales of electric vehicles (2,671 units) surpassed those of combustion vehicles, which sold 2,274.
At this point, it is evident and undeniable that Tesla's arrival will continue to boost the Uruguayan market towards electrification in an unstoppable way, forcing and demanding other brands to review their sales plans so as not to lose customers and to remain competitive, even if some, due to price and segment issues, may not have to endure the fierce competition that some are already facing from the Californian brand.
