Hyundai Motor Company is set to undertake a sweeping overhaul of its Chennai plant with the aim of expanding its market share in India and strengthening its global export competitiveness. 4 billion won, or about $169 million) in the Irungatukottai plant in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, to pursue a full-scale modernization of the facility. The investment is intended to comprehensively revamp production equipment and manufacturing systems in order to simultaneously secure operational efficiency and production flexibility.
While maintaining the existing annual production capacity of approximately 850,000 units, the company plans to introduce automation systems across the entire production process to enhance quality and productivity. Hyundai Motor will also develop an additional site of approximately 181,000 square meters to significantly improve logistics, warehousing, and material transport systems. In particular, the company intends to upgrade state-of-the-art automation equipment in the body, painting, and final assembly processes, and to establish a digital manufacturing system.
This is a measure aimed at laying the foundation to handle not only conventional internal combustion engine vehicles but also electrified models—for which demand is expected to surge in the future—on a single production line. The investment is also expected to generate employment. Hyundai Motor anticipates that approximately 155 new jobs will be created in the course of the facility modernization. As the level of factory automation increases, the growing need for skilled technical personnel is projected to have a positive impact on the local employment market as well.
The Irungatukottai plant serves as a core production base for Hyundai Motor’s Indian subsidiary and currently functions as an export hub supplying vehicles to 88 countries worldwide. 38 billion).
