Posted By: Rob Vogelaar September 23, 2026 On September 21, 2026, Airbus announced the major capital investment to repurpose the historic Welsh facility. The decision highlights the aircraft manufacturer’s ongoing push to scale operations while responding to heavy commercial market demands. Broughton has long served as a vital cornerstone of the manufacturer’s global manufacturing footprint, and this revamp aligns with broader strategic goals across the European aerospace sector. The investment addresses a massive order backlog, as Airbus currently faces orders for roughly 7,500 A320 Family aircraft, with A321 models comprising approximately 75 percent of those bookings.
To handle the increased activity, the company plans to create 480 new local jobs in 2026. This hiring initiative includes placing 250 workers directly inside the refurbished factory, bolstering a local site workforce that already exceeds 6,000 employees. Technically, the repurposed Broughton facility integrates specialized infrastructure, including an equipped wing-fitting line and a dedicated paint shop. Technicians have already started assembling the first A321 wing, with all six planned production jigs scheduled to become fully operational by the end of the year.
The integrated setup directly feeds completed wing sets into the primary assembly lines, streamlining logistics and reducing assembly turnaround times. “Important for jobs, important for the region and important for our global ramp up towards rate 75,” stated Airbus regarding the significance of the Welsh plant overhaul.
