A new pellet plant and the associated combined heat and power (CHP) plant were opened at Theurl Holz Assling GmbH on Friday. 0" project, the East Tyrolean timber industry company is taking another step towards complete raw material utilization and efficient, site-specific energy supply. At the same time, 20 new jobs are being created in the region. The construction of the pellet plant and the CHP plant took around two years.

The first pellets were already coming off the production line in October 2025. With the new facilities, sawmill by-products and residues from wood processing are further utilized directly at the site. High-quality pellets are produced from these in the pellet plant, while bark and wood chips are used in the CHP plant to generate electricity and heat. In this way, Theurl increases the value creation from the raw material used and consistently reuses the by-products generated in the production process. The CHP plant has an electrical output of 4 MW and a thermal output of 12 MW.

This allows the company to generate electricity and heat directly at the site from regionally available wood residues. The electrical energy covers the entire electricity demand of both Theurl sites in Assling. The heat generated during electricity production is used, among other things, for wood drying. In addition, the generated heat is fed into the district heating network, thus contributing to the heat supply of the Thal district. Together with pellet production, the CHP plant strengthens regional energy generation and reduces dependence on external energy sources.

The new pellet plant is designed for an annual production capacity of approximately 80,000 tons. This quantity corresponds mathematically to the annual pellet demand of about 20,000 households. An attached pellet storage facility enables the stocking of larger quantities, thus contributing to a continuous and reliable supply. During planning, particular emphasis was placed on a compact design. This allowed the existing space at the site to be used efficiently and the new infrastructure to be optimally integrated into existing production processes.
