Bitpanda is preparing for its second leadership change in just over a year: CEO Lukas Enzersdorfer-Konrad will leave the Austrian investment platform in the first quarter of 2027, while the planned IPO in Frankfurt remains postponed. Co-founder and Chief Scientist Christian Trummer has been appointed Co-CEO with immediate effect and will lead the company together with Enzersdorfer-Konrad during the transition phase. Bitpanda's supervisory board has initiated a formal succession process that includes both internal and external candidates, but has not announced whether Trummer is being considered for the permanent position.
Enzersdorfer-Konrad is moving to Erste Group, where he will take on a newly created group-wide role as Executive Director Asset Management, reporting directly to CEO Peter Bosek. He will be responsible for the integration of asset management and digital investing across Erste's eight core markets and for its 23 million customers. The move connects two companies that are increasingly competing in the field of digitally offered investments. Bitpanda has expanded beyond its original retail crypto business into stocks, ETFs, and financial infrastructure, while Erste aims to strengthen its investment offering as younger customers increasingly use digital brokers.
Enzersdorfer-Konrad joined Bitpanda in 2018, became Deputy CEO in 2022, and was promoted to Co-CEO in August 2025. Just three months later, he became sole CEO when co-founder Eric Demuth transitioned from day-to-day operations to the role of Executive Chairman. With Trummer's appointment, another founder is moving into operational management. He co-founded Bitpanda in 2014 with Demuth and Paul Klanschek and most recently served as Chief Scientist, focusing on the technology behind the company's trading platform. Bitpanda stated that his expanded role would bring additional executive-level attention to product development, including the multi-asset platform and infrastructure products supplied to banks and other financial institutions.
These business areas are increasingly central to Bitpanda's efforts to move away from the image of being solely a crypto retail broker. The company now offers cryptocurrencies, stocks, and ETFs, complemented by a B2B infrastructure business that enables financial institutions to integrate digital asset investments into their own platforms. This expansion has continued despite the leadership changes. Just this month, Bitpanda announced that its infrastructure would support an expansion of BW-Bank's digital investment offering in Germany, thereby strengthening its relationship with the LBBW Group.
The leadership change at Bitpanda is significant because it coincides with an unfinished IPO process and a costly expansion beyond the crypto business. The next CEO will take over a company that continues to record revenue growth, but whose profitability needs to improve – while also having to decide when the Frankfurt IPO should be relaunched. Bitpanda had reportedly prepared for an IPO on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in the first half of 2026, with a target valuation between 4 and 5 billion euros. Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Deutsche Bank were reportedly selected for the transaction.
This originally planned timeframe has passed without an IPO. Enzersdorfer-Konrad stated that Bitpanda remains ready to go public but has paused the process due to unfavorable market conditions. "We are ready, but we have to weigh what the right time to enter the market is and what is best for the company," he said. A revised timeline has not been announced. This means there is a possibility that the eventual IPO – should it be resumed – will be led by a different CEO than the one who prepared the company for the original 2026 timeframe. The timing is particularly important because Bitpanda's profitability has significantly deteriorated during its expansion.
