Board of Commissioners confirms permanent leadership following a two-year interim tenure marked by record growth and expanded access to care HOLLYWOOD, Fla. , Sept. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- The South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners has voted to name Shane Strum President and Chief Executive Officer of Memorial Healthcare System, confirming a role he has held on an interim basis since September 2024. As permanent CEO, Strum will continue to lead a system of more than 17,000 physicians and employees. During his interim tenure, Strum has overseen the opening of two new freestanding emergency rooms in Miramar and Pembroke Pines, with a third under construction in Hollywood; the start of construction on Memorial Regional Hospital's new $670 million bed tower; new investment in robotic surgery, cardiovascular care, and imaging technology; and the launch and clinical expansion of Better Together, Memorial's collaboration with Broward Health to expand access to primary and maternal care, now growing into oncology, neurosciences, and graduate medical education across both systems.
Memorial also posted the strongest financial performance in the system's 73-year history this past fiscal year. Elizabeth Justen, Chair of the Board of Commissioners, said the board's vote reflects two years of measurable results and confidence in Strum's ability to lead Memorial into its next chapter. "Shane has delivered results our community can see and feel: new emergency rooms, a state-of-the-art bed tower now under construction, and the strongest financial performance in Memorial's history," Justen said. "He's proven he has both the vision and the discipline to lead this system, and today's vote reflects the board's full confidence in him."
Strum is a Broward County native with nearly 30 years of experience across healthcare, public service, higher education, and hospital governance. Strum said he's honored by the board's confidence and energized by what's ahead. "I'm grateful for the trust this board and this community have placed in me," he said. "Memorial is stronger today than it's ever been, and I'm excited to keep building on that momentum, expanding access to care, growing our clinical capabilities, and taking the Better Together collaboration with Broward Health to the next level.
This is just the beginning of what we can accomplish together for Broward County."
