Could EDA AI Startups Be The New Claude Of Chip Design?
Article excerpt
By Karl Freund, Contributor. The semiconductor industry is witnessing a new battleground as AI transforms chip design, moving beyond traditional EDA tools. While EDA incumbents like Cadence and Synopsys integrate AI, three startups - Agentrys, Cognichip, and ChipAgents - are vying for market penetration with distinct strategies. Agentrys focuses on orchestration and enterprise control, Cognichip on physics-informed foundational models, and ChipAgents on vertically integrated platforms with a proprietary model. The immediate focus is automating verification tasks, a major bottleneck. This shift could also portend a new revenue model around design throughput instead of the per-seat pricing in place today. A few months ago I wrote an article on Forbes about Cadence Design SuperAgents that front-end the company’s chip design tools to speed elements of the design workflow by up to 10X, according to the company. Now, several EDA AI startups have entered the game with similar claims, and each is quite different. Let’s take a look. ( Cadence Design is a client of Cambrian-AI Research, the author’s firm. ) Specifically, three startups disclosed details about funding and their software at the Design Automation Conference (DAC) event: Agentrys, ChipAgents, and Cognichip. Many design teams use a combination of tools from the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) leaders, Cadence, Synopsis...
