Lens design patents have been coming out a lot in the last month, we've seen lenses like an RF 180mm f/3.5L Macro, a patent related to a possible RF 85mm f/1.2L II and an RF 28-135mm f/4 IS Power Zoom. We have also reported on a follow-up to the RF 28-70mm f/2L USM that we're pretty confident exists. This patent application may be related to the upcoming f/2 zoom. For the moment, we don't have an announcement date for the lens. We do know that there is another announcement date coming from Canon in 2026 following the EOS R8 Mark II launch. Japan patent 2026-143946 shows an optical design for an RF 20-60mm f/2L VCM internal zoom lens. We call it a VCM because once again, it's a design that uses two focus motors to drive the focus groups independently, which is how the current VCM lenses work, though we don't have a zoom VCM lens yet. In case you didn't know, the current VCM prime lenses use a dual focus motor design, one motor is a VCM (voice coil motor) paired with a nano-USM (ultrasonic motor) to drive the focus groups. The RF 14mm f/1.4L VCM is the only one that uses a dual VCM motor setup. It's only a matter of time before we start seeing VCM zoom lenses, and I think that day is getting close.
