As the only investor-owned electric and gas utility based in Texas, CenterPoint Energy Inc. on Tuesday launched its Customer Savings Initiative, which the company says could save Texas electric customers more than $5 billion over the next decade. "We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to generate historic levels of customer savings of more than $5 billion statewide by leveraging new investment in large projects to build a more affordable, reliable, and resilient electric grid for millions of customers," said CenterPoint Energy Chairman and CEO Jason Wells. The infrastructure investments and economic development opportunities not only have the potential to save current customers billions, Wells said, they also will create jobs and generate millions in local tax revenue to improve local schools and community public services. CenterPoint's newly announced savings initiative is driven by the planned addition of up to 14 new gigawatts (GW) of ERCOT eligible base load and studied load projects. The additional load from these projects would translate into customer savings over the next decade through more and larger customers paying more of the share of fixed grid costs, according to the company.
