Safety programs are like insurance for your supply chain. Yes, you pay for car insurance because 1) it’s the law and 2) you want to protect your vehicle. And yet, no one goes around LOOKING to crash. Insurance doesn’t automatically make an accident okay. The same applies to your team; safety programs don’t magically make accidents acceptable. Safety insurance can’t prevent (or even predict) every single potential risk … but they can be mitigated. That’s the goal of safety. To protect you from all angles. Prevent what you can and minimize everything else. A safety program acts as insurance; it ensures that if or when an accident occurs, you’ve already done everything you can to prevent it.
