What a way to come back to the office. Fidelity Investments employees will return on a full-time basis next week to the company's Boston headquarters for the first time since before the pandemic. They'll be working - and wandering around - inside a building that must be unlike any other corporate office they've seen. That's because Pembroke, Fidelity's real estate arm, just wrapped up a six-year-long renovation project of its massive Commonwealth Pier property in the Seaport. How massive? This century-old building, formerly known as the Boston World Trade Center, is around 1,500 feet from end to end, as long as the Hancock Tower (sorry, 200 Clarendon) is high. Fidelity is announcing that this 840,000-square-foot building will be its official headquarters. It had been unclear when the company announced its new return-to-work policy in April whether the old headquarters, at 245 Summer St. next to South Station, would still be designated as such - or if the honor would go to the redesigned waterfront building with the harbor views and new ferry stop. About 3,200 employees will report to 245 Summer now, compared with 2,100 at the pier complex/headquarters, and another 1,000 at an expanded location at Seaport West, a Pembroke-managed office tower across from the pier.
