Fifth Third Bank is planning another big round of layoffs in metro Detroit following its recent acquisition of Comerica Bank. The Cincinnati-based bank this week notified the state that by Sept. 11, it intends to lay off 234 people working at Comerica's former Auburn Hills Operations Center, 3701 Hamlin Road in Auburn Hills. The layoff notice didn't specify a reason for the job cuts. In May, Fifth Third told the state that it planned to lay off 502 people this summer at what was Comerica's Great Lakes Campus in Farmington Hills. Together with this latest round of layoffs, the number of expected job cuts attributable to the Fifth Third/Comerica merger is now over 700. Fifth Third acquired Texas-based Comerica this past February in a $12.7 billion all-stock deal. Fifth Third told investors this month that it anticipates the acquisition producing $850 million in yearly "run-rate synergies" - generally lower costs and expenses - starting in the fourth quarter. Fifth Third issued a media statement July 22 regarding its latest round of planned layoffs. "We consistently review our operations to ensure we're organized for long-term growth and sustainable profitability," a Fifth Third spokesperson said in the statement.
