What happened

In October 2026 Johnson & Johnson Surgical Vision patented gas-assisted fluid control for ophthalmic procedures using surgical irrigation systems.

Source

Abstract

A surgical system is provided that includes a spike suitable for insertion into a fluid reservoir containing a surgical fluid and a gas pressure pocket. The spike provides the surgical fluid from the fluid reservoir to a surgical pack and provides pressurized gas from a pressure gas source to the fluid reservoir. The surgical system includes a controller that enables operation of the pressure gas source if an output of the pressurized gas is within a pre-determined range. The controller disables the operation of the pressure gas source if the output of the pressurized gas reaches an amount outside of the pre-determined range that causes a critical error. The controller iteratively modifies the surgical system if the output of the pressurized gas is between the pre-determined range and the amount outside of the pre-determined range that causes a critical error until the output is brought within the pre-determined range.
