Samsung C&T Partners With Kairos Power

Samsung C&T is joining hands with a leading US next-generation nuclear power technology company to expand its small modular reactor (SMR) business territory to include non-light water reactor methods. The plan is to execute an investment of about $70 million to establish a long-term partnership from technology demonstration to the commercialization stage. Samsung C&T’s construction division announced on Sep. 22 that it will sign a strategic business agreement with US SMR developer Kairos Power for the demonstration and commercialization of next-generation SMRs. This agreement is scheduled to take place on September 23 during ‘Climate Week NYC’ held in New York. Key officials from both companies, including Lee Chang-wook, head of Samsung C&T’s Energy Solution Business Division, and Mike Laufer, Chief Executive Officer of Kairos Power, will attend the event to confirm cooperation measures. Kairos Power, a company established in 2016, possesses technology that uses ‘molten salt’, a liquid created by melting solid salt at high temperatures, as a coolant. Unlike existing light water reactor-type SMRs that use water as a coolant and require high-pressure operation, utilizing a non-light water coolant allows for high-temperature operation even at low pressures.
