By Christopher Cheney Mayo Clinic has adopted an AI tool to help identify hospitalized patients who can benefit from palliative care services. Research has shown that palliative care generates several benefits for patients, health systems and hospitals, including improving the quality of end-of-life care, reducing 30-day hospital readmissions, decreasing ICU utilization, and achieving significant cost-of-care reductions for hospitalized patients with severe illness. Despite these benefits, as many as 60% of patients who could benefit from palliative care do not receive those services. To address underutilization of palliative care services, Mayo Clinic and Bayesian Health developed an AI tool to boost palliative care in the hospital setting. "For us, this AI tool is solving a particular problem, which is identifying which patients with serious illness could benefit from palliative care," says Jacob Strand, MD, chair of palliative care at Mayo Clinic. The AI tool examines more than 300 variables, including patients' pain scores, medications, and history of receiving palliative care services in the past.
