Twenty-five years after the World Trade Center terror attack on Sept. 11, 2001, physicians and patients gathered at Long Island Jewish Medical Center to commemorate the grim anniversary and to sound the alarm about an ongoing health crisis. Behind the growing number of 9/11-related cancers are people with stories that began that day. Frank Kotnik is a cancer survivor, a @NYC_DOT blacksmith who worked 20-hour shifts in the moonscape around Ground Zero, surrounded by the toxic dust and debris. Decades later, he was diagnosed with bladder cancer. "Really? Twenty-three years later?" he said. Felicia Ivey-Toure, a mental health counselor, spent the months after 9/11 providing crisis and grief counseling to responders in Lower Manhattan. Years later, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and discovered that many of her colleagues and friends were facing cancers of their own, unaware that their illnesses could be 9/11-related. While 9/11-related cancers are on the rise, comprehensive screening offers early discovery and successful treatment at specialized cancer centers.
