Follow Us PhonePe, an Indian digital payments and financial services company, has launched UPI 123Pay for feature phones in India, allowing users to make UPI payments without an internet connection. The company said the service is aimed at India's more than 200 million feature phone users and is intended to extend digital payments to people who may not have access to smartphones or reliable mobile data. PhonePe said it was the first major third-party application provider, or TPAP, to extend UPI payments to feature phones. The service will come pre-bundled on devices from Nokia, HMD, Lava International and Itel Mobile, part of Transsion Holdings. PhonePe said partnerships with other handset manufacturers would follow in the coming months. PhonePe UPI 123Pay uses an SMS-based system designed to work in areas with limited 2G connectivity. The service also allows users to check account balances, manage their accounts and view transaction histories. PhonePe said future updates will add bill payments, recharges and Aadhaar-based onboarding to UPI.
