The agreement, signed in the presence of Defense Minister Theo Francken and Walloon Minister-President Adrien Dolimont, marks "an important step" and will see Belgian companies supply Pratt & Whitney with large and "highly complex" components for the F135 engine. This engine powers the F-35 Lightning II fighter jet, of which the Belgian Defense has acquired several dozen units to replace aging F16s. The Liège-based company and its partner BMT Aerospace will use advanced additive manufacturing or 3D printing technologies. This will reduce the costs and manufacturing times of these titanium components, described as among "the most critical". The financial terms of the contract were not specified. On X, Defense Minister, responsible for Foreign Trade, Theo Francken, mentioned other and "numerous" contracts signed by Belgian companies during the Farnborough air show. Companies Sabena Engineering, Asco, Thales Belgium and Aerospacelab thus signed new agreements with the US group Lockheed Martin as part of the F-35 program, according to the minister who believes that F-35 rhymes with jobs in Belgium. "Step by step, we are further anchoring Belgian industry in the world's largest defense program," estimates Theo Francken.
