okta gives us great visibility into everything provisioned through it, but that's the problem, it's only visibility into what's already in okta. i suspect there's a chunk of apps in use across the org that never got added, either because someone spun up a saas tool without going through it, or because an old app predates our okta rollout and nobody circled back to integrate it. is there a way to use okta itself to discover this shadow layer, or does that require something outside okta entirely? trying to figure out if i'm missing a feature or if this is just a known limitation of idp-centric visibility.

  • [comment u/imbored3469] SaaS Managers is what you’re referring too. I’ve looked at SailPoint and 1Password products. Both companies acquired their products formerly known as Intello and Trelica.

  • “It can, via Identity Security Posture Management, and a plugin called SAM. It's expensive, but it offers more than just shadow IT. Even though I still don't think it's worth using more than 1 year.”

  • “My org got the 1Password version, formerly Trellica. It makes it so much easier to address shadow IT and stray accounts across platforms. And to give real numbers to Csuite to prompt action.”

  • “I use SaaS Manager (fka Trelica) for Shadow IT and it pulls a lot of data from Google Workspace and Microsoft Entra to capture Shadow IT and use that against Okta to see what people are using with valid permission.”

  • “I am currently working on this using zscaler and okta workflows. zscaler compiles a list of apps used and I use their api to pull it. unfortunately you get a csv but once its parsed and added to a table, you can run another workflow to search all okta app integrations and compare them with the zscaler shadow it report and send an api call to sanction or unsanction the app to zscaler api”
