“AI will replace search.” “AI search is still too small to matter.” We’ve heard both takes. The reality is more nuanced. Last quarter, AI-referred sessions to Shopify stores grew nearly 3x year-over-year. At the same time, traditional organic search sessions grew on top of a much larger base. The takeaway: Shoppers aren’t abandoning one surface for another. They’re using AI search and organic search for different jobs. AI search is most useful for research-heavy shopping journeys: moments when someone wants to compare use cases, reviews, and all the details before making a purchase. Traditional organic search plays a different role: it’s the traffic driver, and still the path when a shopper already has a brand or product in mind.
