This Monday morning saw a solid gain of +11%, which I consider a justified reaction to the recent events and announcements surrounding OpenAI and fresh capital. Who would have thought that after Meta and Alphabet, SoftBank would also place a bond, and what's more, the largest retail bond ever issued by a Japanese company. Around 6.3 billion US dollars are now accessible to Japanese private investors at a coupon of 4.3 and 4.9%. The proceeds flow directly into the OpenAI bet and into the repayment of maturing debts. SoftBank is known to have invested around 500 million US dollars in OpenAI. However, one must not forget that this is already the third retail bond of the year, after SoftBank placed two smaller bonds in April and June 2026. Probably the most exciting component is the planned US IPO of SB Energy. SoftBank's subsidiary officially filed the IPO application with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, with a targeted valuation of over 50 billion US dollars.
