At Volkswagen, fear for one's job is spreading. The group is cutting tens of thousands of positions, while many employees have a contractually guaranteed employment security. Operational redundancies are excluded at Volkswagen AG until the end of 2030. The real uncertainty therefore lies not in the present, but in the years thereafter. The starting point is the "Future Volkswagen" agreement from December 2024. At that time, the group and IG Metall agreed, after tough negotiations, on the reduction of more than 35,000 jobs at German locations by 2030. Plant closures were averted, and the reduction is to be carried out in a socially responsible manner. In return, the workforce waived wage increases, and bonuses were cut. The reduction is primarily carried out through partial retirement, early retirement, and severance packages. VW has expanded partial retirement and also offers younger employees money for a voluntary departure. Those who accept the offer leave the company in a planned manner and with a contract.
