The Des Moines metro's second-largest employer has announced more layoffs, bringing Wells Fargo's total to more than 320 this year. The bank will lay off 14 employees at its Jordan Creek campus in West Des Moines in its 12th round of cuts since February, it announced Tuesday, Aug. 18, via Iowa's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification , or WARN, site. The layoffs will take effect Oct. 17. The latest layoffs bring Wells Fargo's total to 322 in 2026 after an initial paring of 49 workers in February. The third-largest bank in the U.S. by assets, Wells Fargo has cut 1,619 jobs in 103 announced rounds of layoffs in the Des Moines metro since April 2022, according to WARN data, with many more jobs lost to attrition. The bank laid off 501 Des Moines workers in 2025. CEO Charlie Scharf has led a wave of job cuts since joining the company in 2019, slimming its workforce amid an industry shakeup brought on by factors including artificial intelligence. The San Francisco-based bank's national employment has fallen by about 65,000 since 2019. The company reported strong second-quarter financial results July 14, topping projected earnings by $700 million. Wells Fargo did not share any new information Thursday, such as the divisions the layoffs will affect and whether the employees losing their position will be retained in other capacities.
