American Express has added a high-yield savings account to its small-business banking lineup, offering a 2.95% annual percentage yield as of September 15. For investors, the useful question is not whether one new account moves earnings this quarter. It is whether the product can bring more business cash onto an existing deposit base of nearly $157 billion and bind checking, cards, payroll and rewards into a relationship that is harder to leave. The company has not disclosed a deposit target, expected acquisition cost or profit contribution for Business Savings. That omission matters. American Express shares finished Friday, September 18, at $311.56, up $0.39, or 0.13%, from Thursday on volume of 5.72 million shares. They were down 4.0% from their September 15 close. Those figures establish that the market did not deliver an obvious launch-day verdict; they do not establish that the savings account caused the decline. The September 15 launch announcement set the Business Savings APY at 2.95%, with no minimum balance and no monthly maintenance fee. The rate is variable and was accurate on the launch date.
