AT&T previously phased out POTS copper landlines in Texas after petitioning the FCC, ceasing outside plant build-outs and stopping orders on copper facilities.

Anyone know general expected timeline for actual landline shutdown after FCC approval?

I received a notice (in PA)that Verizon has applied to have FCC approval to discontinue landline service on or after November 30th, 2026. They did not yet provide info about what options will be available at that point, but there is no Fios here, so it will likely be just wireless. Does anyone know from experience or have a general idea about how long after November 30th the landline service will actually shut off? I have to change a lot of contact and verification numbers in a hurry if it’s actually November 30th since I’ll be in the hospital for part of the month. Does anyone know in other areas of the country how long after the date they applied to the fcc for did actual service end? Just looking for general experiences with the timeline.

  • [comment u/boomer7793] In Texas it was fairly quick. AT&T petitioned the FCC that being required to maintain two networks (POTS and Internet) was an unfair requirement. The FCC agreed. Within that year, they stopped outside plant build-outs. The next year they stopped taking orders for buildings that had copper facilities.
