BMW has started series production of its new Gen6 batteries in Bavaria, a key technology for the Neue Klasse that will debut in the new BMW i3 with 108.7 kWh capacity, up to 906 WLTP kilometers, and a charging power of up to 400 kW. BMW has just activated one of the fundamental pieces of its electric strategy for the coming years. The company has officially started series production at its new plant in Irlbach-Straßkirchen, Bavaria, from where the Gen6 batteries that the new BMW i3, based on the Neue Klasse platform, will use. The facility also starts at a higher pace than initially planned. The high demand that BMW expects for its new electric vehicles has led to directly starting with two production shifts, barely two and a half years after the start of construction. The project has involved an investment of close to 1,000 million euros and will become one of BMW's strategic centers for high-voltage battery production in Germany. The plant occupies an area of about 60 hectares and, when it reaches full capacity, will have approximately 1,600 workers.
