By WMBD TV PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) - Caterpillar, Inc. is expanding its mining division in acquiring a company that uses artificial intelligence technology to speed up the mining process. Skycatch uses AI to enhance its spatial data analysis to take in a vast amount of data and come up with solutions faster than previous technology. On Tuesday, Caterpillar announced adding Skycatch to its arsenal as part of its continuing acquisition of a Brisbane, Australia-based mining company RPMGlobal. "Acquiring Skycatch aligns with our strategy to solve our customers' toughest challenges," said Denise Johnson, who is the president of the company's Resource Industries segment. "By integrating near-real-time, high-resolution spatial data into both RPM and MineStar solutions, we can help customers improve mine site performance by enhancing safety, productivity and predictability across their operations using both staffed and autonomous fleets," she said Caterpillar began their acquisition of RPMGlobal last October. The head of RPMGlobal, Richard Matthews, said Skycatch technology will have a major benefit on their mining products by improving decision-making, reducing delays and holding greater confidence in daily operations.
