By Mark LaPedus At its annual technology event this week, GlobalFoundries (GF) made a trio of announcements, including a collaboration with a gain-cell memory startup. The startup, called RAAAM Memory Technologies, is developing a technology called Gain-Cell RAM (GCRAM). GCRAM is an on-chip memory technology, which can be used as a drop-in replacement for SRAM in chip designs. GF is in the process of qualifying GCRAM in its 22nm FD-SOI technology. Also at its technology conference, called the GlobalFoundries Technology Summit (GTS), GF disclosed more details about its new 40nm and 22nm UX technology platform and announced a foundry alliance with QuantalRF. Based in Malta, N.Y., GF is a major foundry vendor. Basically, foundry vendors manufacture chips for other companies in large manufacturing facilities called fabs. Let's take a look at each one of these technology announcements at GTS, which took place in Santa Clara, Calif. In the first announcement, GF disclosed a strategic collaboration with Isreal's RAAAM Memory Technologies. The partnership reached a major milestone with the tape-out of a GCRAM test chip using GF's 22nm FD-SOI technology. Fully depleted silicon-on-insulator, or FD-SOI, is a low-power planar technology. Founded in 2021, RAAAM Memory Technologies is developing a gain-cell memory technology, which is still in R&D. Last year, the startup received $17.5...
