When Alaska Airlines acquired Hawaiian Airlines, the obvious question was whether the dominant party would allow its much smaller acquisition to wither and die due to a lack of investment. So when Alaska Airlines announced a massive new premium push for its own fleet on Tuesday, it was also sure to include Hawaiian Airlines. What Hawaiian Airlines is getting is a nose-to-tail refit of its entire long-haul widebody Airbus A330 fleet, including a new and expanded Business Class cabin, a new Premium Economy cabin, and a new lounge at its Honolulu hub. While the new Business Class experience at Alaska Airlines has been dubbed Aurora, the experience at Hawaiian Airlines is being called Leihōkū and translates to “lei of stars.” While the Alaska Airlines Group wants to raise the bar across both airlines, it is also being careful to maintain Hawaiian’s unique island culture. So what will the Leihōkū look like? The main change that passengers will see is a complete refurbishment of all 24 of Hawaiian Airlines’ Airbus A330 aircraft in its fleet. Old 2-2-2 Business Class seats will be ripped out and replaced with new Business Class suites based on the Collins Aerospace Super Diamond platform.
