Mistral raises 3 billion: Microsoft to use its European computing capacity

Mistral has just raised 3 billion euros. The most revealing figure of its trajectory had, however, been announced in July: Microsoft committed, as part of a multi-billion dollar agreement, to utilize a portion of the GPU infrastructure that the French company is developing in Europe. This move deserves more attention than Mistral's valuation, now exceeding 21 billion euros. Its models have long been available on Azure. Microsoft is now also a user of its European computing capacity. A company born three years ago as a model laboratory is starting to sell one of the assets that determine who can truly train and operate artificial intelligence: installed, powered, and available GPUs. This infrastructure is gradually moving beyond PowerPoint presentations. In March, Mistral secured 830 million dollars in debt from seven banks to purchase 13,800 Nvidia GPUs for its first large data center near Paris, in Bruyères-le-Châtel. Reuters then reported the goal of securing 200 MW of capacity in Europe by the end of 2027. In Fouju, Seine-et-Marne, Mistral has since secured 96 MW from Campus AI, with a planned ramp-up to 200 MW. This capacity is intended to serve both the training of Mistral's models and the execution of its clients' models. Its commissioning is announced for early 2028.
