In 2020, when aerospace giant Pratt & Whitney announced plans to locate a colossal turbine airfoil manufacturing plant in southern Buncombe County, all the numbers associated with the project were huge. Its parent company, Raytheon Technologies (now RTX), said it would invest at least $650 million in a plant that would sit on 100 acres and encompass 1 million square feet. It would create 800 new jobs by 2027, with a target annual average wage of $62,413. Now, six years later, the company has exceeded all of those numbers. "To date, we've invested nearly $1 billion in the facility and employ 1,000 workers - well ahead of the 800 workers we committed to hire by 2027," Pratt & Whitney's local spokesperson, Cataldo Perrone, said via email. "We're continuing to hire and expect to employ 1,200 workers by 2027." The jobs figure is particularly important, as these high-tech positions pay more than many other jobs locally and have a ripple effect through the local economy. Pratt & Whitney is a subsidiary of RTX, an international company with extensive military contracts that manufactures everything from aircraft engines and avionics to missiles and drones. Demand for commercial and military jet engines remains strong, and Pratt & Whitney's Asheville plant can play a critical role in meeting it.
