Article excerpt

T-Mobile is testing the integration of humanoid robots into modern mobile networks in order to offload compute-intensive tasks from the machines. As Chief Technology Officer John Saw announced, the US telecommunications company is investigating whether humanoid robots can achieve faster response times by outsourcing AI calculations to the network edge while simultaneously getting by with less onboard computing power. A central component of this initiative is a cooperation with the robotics company Figure AI. As part of the partnership, it is being examined whether parts of the Helix S1 and Helix S2 models as well as systems for motion sequences, image and speech processing can be operated at the network edge without impairing the responsiveness of the robots. The goal of the collaboration is to reduce the battery consumption, computing load, heat generation, weight, and overall costs of the machines. In addition, the cooperation with Figure AI provides for the use of eSIMs for humanoid robots. To provide the necessary computing architecture, T-Mobile is also working with AWS. Together, initial instances of a distributed intelligence infrastructure called Kinetic Edge have been set up, which is based on 5G-Advanced and edge computing in combination with AWS cloud orchestration. According to an assessment by T-Mobile CTO John Saw on October 27, 2026, so-called physical AI...
