The massive ivy-covered building tucked into the trees looks mysterious, almost hidden in plain sight. Some people mistake it for a golf driving range. Others barely notice it at all. But the former Weyerhaeuser Corporate Headquarters is actually one of the most unique and iconic buildings in the Pacific Northwest, a property deeply tied to Washington history, architecture, and industry. "The building hits every check mark for being beloved. It is iconic to the region," said Pretty Gritty Tours guide Chris Staudinger. "Currently, it is empty. When Weyerhaeuser moved out of here up to Seattle, ever going north, they sold the building to, I believe, Industrial Real Estate Group, which is holding on to it until they figure out how this will be developed again." Staudinger, who owns Tacoma-based Pretty Gritty Tours, has made a career out of uncovering hidden Northwest history. And few places capture that spirit better than the old Weyerhaeuser campus.
