So something I notice as I hit middle age in this industry is that I always hope to get an old service tech on the phone when I have an issue. I just feel like the loss of knowledge is becoming apparent in dealing with equipment and software issues. I just want to sit down for a whole day with an engineer that is close to retirement and absorb and record everything they know. I want to know what each part does (boards specifically), the history of revisions for each one, and what issues come up in each previous generation of releases. I find myself wanting to learn everything I can about this, but not being able to find information about it. God example the old 6890 service manual can be found online and it is an 850 page behemoth and I love it. Then you look at the 8890 and it is no where near as detailed. The same can be said about the 5973-->5977 series. Anyone else feel this way too?

  • “I agree with this, and newer models are always less serviceable by the users. Over my decades as an operator, I've gained so much knowledge that is not in any manuals. My Agilent and Thermo FSEs have been generous, sharing internal technical documents that are not for public use. I love to ask all my questions when they're on site for a PM. The software updates are also rarely improvements, just”
