How is Amgen hiring anyone with such garbage pay rates?

I am legitimately confused as to how they are hiring anyone remotely qualified offering the pay rates that they do. Over the course of my job search, I have had recruiters contact me for three separate PhD-level contract roles at Amgen's South San Francisco location, each offering less than $40/hr. These are TEMPORARY CONTRACT ROLES, meaning no stability and likely no benefits. And they still barely offer more than an academic postdoc earns in the UC system. Hell, total compensation after benefits is likely MORE at an academic UC postdoc after you factor in the subsidized health insurance. Are they just coasting off of their name recognition and big pharma status? Are people just that desperate to break into industry? I think recruiters telling me the pay range of Amgen positions has been the only time during my job search that I have honestly felt insulted. Edit: a word

[comment u/aalalaland] Amgen is notorious for underpaying contractors. I assume they get away with it because they’re one of the only big players in the LA area and people will accept the low pay to get their foot in the door.
