What happened

Defense and federal contractors in r/CMMC note that ElevenLabs' new FedRAMP listing is only Class A (Pilot) covering zero retention mode, making it insufficient for Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) compliance which requires FedRAMP Moderate.

been keeping a list of which ai tools are actually ok to use around cui because honestly i kept getting confused. saw elevenlabs finally got a class on the fedramp marketplace but its Class A (Pilot), which from what i can tell is below Low, and cui needs Moderate. and it only covers their zero retention mode. so basically nice for public voice stuff, not for anything cui. am i reading that right? you can see it on the marketplace here marketplace.fedramp.gov Thoughts?

  • [comment u/nexeris_ops] You’re reading it right. FedRAMP Moderate is the floor for anything touching CUI, and Class A Pilot sits below Low, so ElevenLabs doesn’t clear that bar yet.

  • “Genuinely, what are you using ElevenLabs for that involves CUI?”

  • “Their certification is class A which is replacing FedRAMP Ready. I haven't dug too deep into the 20x labels and the requirement for class A, but I'll provide context for FedRAMP Ready as it probably is more or less the same for class A. FedRAMP Ready did not mean the CSP has implemented all the required controls necessary to satisfy the federal agency or PMO. It really just meant someone has loo”

  • “the bigger question is whether the specific service is authorized for the environment where the CUI would be processed. a FedRAMP marketplace listing alone doesn't mean it's approved for CUI, especially if it's Class A rather than Moderate. i'd wait for clear DoD guidance before relying on 20x for CUI.”
