  • “If he has a bench test thats just putting PWR and GND and its working, then those are the only 2 circuits that need to be troubleshot/confirmed in the plane.”

  • “The suggestion on the pins making contact is good. Just a friendly reminder that grounds are the bane of aircraft (hell, cars too). You would be surprised how much trouble they can be. Try a different ground.”

  • “Check, double check, triple check, and quadruple check that connector at the back of the tray, then the ground. The amount of times I had ground issues on KLN 90s on Senecas… Also check that the unit is actually tightening into the tray correctly. I used to tighten half a turn, push the unit in, tighten half a turn, push the unit in etc etc until tight”

  • “Assuming it is powering up in the plane and is working (other than the display) it is probably a dimming circuit problem. But it is not worth keeping a KLN90 alive. You can get a garmin WAAS GPS cheap (like GPS400W)”

  • “It could be a short somewhere in the aircraft wiring maybe? Or the smoking could’ve been an overload, and a fuse got blown?”
