Google has announced a $1.2 million contribution to improve water conservation in Chile's Maipo River Basin, where its Quilicura data centre operates. The funding will support Aguas Andinas in upgrading a 2.5-kilometre section of the Unidos de Buin Canal Association's main irrigation canal, which supplies water to local agriculture. The project in Chile will replace the canal's existing earthen surface with concrete lining to reduce water lost through seepage. The improvements are also intended to limit sedimentation and erosion, improving water quality. Google estimates that the upgraded infrastructure could save up to 7.4 million cubic metres of water annually over its lifespan. The investment forms part of Google's wider water stewardship activities near its data centre operations. According to the company, its water replenishment projects returned more water to the Maipo River Basin in 2025 than its Quilicura data centre consumed during the same year. The new contribution extends those efforts by financing water conservation infrastructure for agricultural users in the surrounding watershed. Google has not specified when construction will begin or when the projected annual water savings are expected to be achieved. Data centres consume water for cooling and other operational needs, creating environmental considerations for the communities and watersheds where they...
