LANGKAWI – Hilton has expanded its presence in Malaysia with the opening of Hilton Burau Bay Langkawi Resort, a new beachfront resort on the island. The resort was officially opened in the presence of the Sultan of Kedah, who had previously called for Langkawi to be developed according to its own identity and character rather than emulate destinations such as Phuket or Bali. In his remarks at his 84th birthday investiture ceremony at Istana Anak Bukit in July, the Sultan said Langkawi's strength lay in its natural treasures and unique heritage. Tradewinds Corporation Berhad acting group chief executive officer Izmir Abdul Karim said the resort was developed to reflect Langkawi's character while supporting the island's tourism industry.
