Seeking some perspective from fellow travellers. Currently travelling solo for work and checked into a Hilton at around 4pm. I grabbed dinner at 7ish and came back at 20:40. When I reached my room the door was shut, but I heard someone inside. When I called out a voice from around the bathroom corner said ‘I’m neatly done come in’. I stayed in the doorway and asked what they were doing in my room and got the same response again. I refused to enter and walked straight to reception. It ended up being a housekeeper and reception claimed it was part of a trial for expanded cleaning hours. As a solo female traveller being expected to walk into a closed room with an unknown person not emerging at nearly 9 o clock at night is deeply unsettling. There was no notification at check in, no email and no warning. I’ve stayed here many times before and obviously never had this before. Has anyone ever heard of hotels doing routine housekeeping this late? Genuinely felt like leaving and checking in somewhere else as I’ve had to go and check there are no more random hour cleaning checks and feel very on edge.

  • “I worked as a housekeeper for several hotels. Longest was Marriott. Doors were always propped open, cart in front. And evening hours? Absolutely not. We were done by 3.”

  • “There wasn't a cleaning cart outside the room? Was the room actually cleaned? Towels cleaned? Toiletries replaced? Sink & toilet wiped down? Bed made? Anything to support their claim? Otherwise this is very strange.”

  • “That's not cool.  I don't want anyone with access to my room after regular hours. Also,  why do they not prop the door open while in it?”

    u/silverware902140 points · Oct 20, 2026View

  • “Wasn’t the room already cleaned that day before you checked in? Why were they cleaning it again?”

    u/Grimaldehyde16 points · Oct 20, 2026View

  • “Are you sure it wasn't turndown service? This type of service is very common, especially at high-end hotels. It's basically a second housekeeping run - they clean up a bit and prepare the room for the night.”

Normally there would be some indication that they are cleaning the room (a cart outside the door, other cleaners in the hall/other rooms, the door propped open). It's also very strange to be cleaning a room that late at night. I get they said they are extending the hours but if that's true this is wild. I would feel so scared to come back to my room and have someone in there",

Since it is a service done by Housekeeping, they may not understand exactly how to word it when speaking with the guest. Either way, the hotel should've rolled it out better. It's important to set clear expectations with guests. Obviously, if you were aware of this new offering, you wouldn't have been",
