JetBlue Airways has won a bid to acquire Spirit Airlines' slots at New York's LaGuardia airport for $58.5 million. The carrier beat Frontier Airlines' $57.5 million bid for the 22 take-off and landing slots, US Southern District of New York bankruptcy court documents filed on 20 July show. Frontier's bid has been selected as a back-up in case JetBlue's acquisition does not go through. A court hearing is scheduled to take place on 22 July to determine whether to approve the transfer of slots to JetBlue, which already operates out of LaGuardia. Spirit Airlines closed down on 2 May after nearly running out of cash. The following month, its parent company, Spirit Aviation Holdings, put its assets, including the LaGuardia slots and several dozen Airbus A320-family aircraft, up for auction. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, had originally opposed the sale of Spirit's slots, arguing in court documents that the slots "do not have intrinsic value without corresponding permission from the airport sponsor to utilise particular facilities at the airport, which is not and could not be auctioned alongside the slots themselves".
