I'm a beginner to agentic AI and I'm severely disappointed by the LangChain docs. Mainly for 2 reasons (but there are more): Lack of information on how to integrate LOCAL / self-hosted models: I'm using Ollama and llama.cpp for local LLMs. When I go to the install & quickstart page there is nearly zero information about how to use it with llama.cpp. Ok fine, it says check the providers list for more... BS... llama.cpp isn't on it. Doc search doesn't find it either. I found the page through Google AFTER I'd already given up. It exists, you just can't reach it from inside the docs. So I switched to Ollama, and the docs, instead of first telling me how to get my model running, dump me straight into issue 2. LangSmith / product spam everywhere: Before I can even fathom how it's going to use my Ollama model for anything agentic, it hits me with "To enable automated tracing of your model calls, set your LangSmith API key." Like what the shit? I haven't made a single call yet. Docs and examples totally rely on API calls: yeah, it's the norm now, very few people have their own hosted model. But at least give ONE alternative example. Also, For beginners I guess adding some information about how Langchain is gonna work/tutorial, some images explaining the flow and components would be appreciated. there are some but not enough. Either actually people are skipping to read docs and...

  • “It sucks. If you still need help with a self-hosted model, I usually use an OpenAI-compatible API, as both Ollama and vLLM support this, don't know about llama.cpp. Set the auth token to a dummy value starting withsk- (e.g., sk-dummy) to bypass the SDK's format check, you don't need an actual key. Then, use a custom header like x-api-key or Authorization for the actual authentication.”

  • “I would check out the python and typescript quick start in langchain academy thats the only thing that got me anywhere. Basicaly you need to understand State, nodes, edges, conditional edges and most importantly that nodes are just functions. From there you need to understand that unlike the programming your used to. were not just writing functions and composing them like in the old days you still”
