Hi everyone,I’m evaluating a move away from Xilinx UltraScale because of the long lead times. One of the main options I’m looking at is Microchip’s PolarFire (FPGA) with the Libero SoC design tools.I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have hands-on experience with PolarFire and Libero:• How does the overall tool experience (Libero) compare to Vivado?• How is the documentation quality? Is it solid and usable, or do you frequently run into gaps / unclear sections?• Any major gotchas or limitations we should know about when coming from the Xilinx world?• In your experience, is PolarFire a realistic alternative for designs that would otherwise go into an UltraScale device (performance, I/O, SERDES, power, etc.)?Any real-world feedback - good or bad - would be very helpful. Thanks in advance!

  • [comment u/redskrot] I would advice hardly against it. Polarfire/libero is a nightmare and vivado such a user-friendly piece of heaven in comparison.

  • [comment u/LordDecapo] I refuse to ever touch LiberoSoC again... work would have to double my pay for me to even think about touching that hot mess ever again.. if its ever an option... run... run VERY far...

  • [comment u/hughjabooty] Libero is dog shit compared to Vivado, you’ll spend more time fighting the tool than actually designing

  • “Microchip is riddled with internal fights and that creeps into customer support. No support and lack of documentation. If you can get it work on your own, good for you. The devices are nice, getting them to work is a nightmare”

  • “We regularly pair AMD and Microchip parts in our designs, but we also maintain our own top files outside the GUIs and build from the terminal. Comparing the two tool chains is best done comparing 10 year old Vivado with current version Libero, just to set expectations. The Libero UI is full featured: component look up, block mapping, timing reports, ILA debugger. But accessing that feature and u”

  • “It’s wild to me that the lead times are the motivation for considering a change. Do you understand why the lead times are so long? I’ll explain what’s going on. Sometimes when lead times are long it’s due to yield issues, or perhaps they are nearing then end of production…. Neither of those are what’s going on here. Ultrascale+ is an excellent products, great yields, and is planned to be in prod”
