A Middletown packaging plant is set to close this fall, with dozens of layoffs planned. According to a notice filed with the Ohio Department of Job & Family Services on Thursday, 91 workers at the Packaging Corporation of America are expected to lose their jobs as the packaging plant at 1824 Baltimore Street is shuttered. In the letter, which was addressed to the mayor of Middletown and Butler County commissioners, Packaging Corporation of America says that the decision has been made to consolidate the company's operations into "larger and more efficient operations" elsewhere. According to the company, this includes a new $275 million plant that recently opened just outside of Columbus this summer. "PCA will collaborate with you and all other state and local government officials - including the Department of Job & Family Services - to provide dislocated worker assistance to the affected employees. We will also assist any affected employees who may be interested in transferring to another PCA location with open positions," the letter said. The final day of operations for workers at the plant will be on December 1. Afterwards, the company plans to fully vacate the building by the end of the year.
