Post

Our Viptela vEdge boxes are hitting end of life and Cisco is steering us onto Catalyst 8000 with IOS-XE SD-WAN, which means a full migration and another DNA subscription. I spent more hours last renewal fighting the licensing than I ever spent on the SD-WAN itself, and before I sign up for more of that I want to look at the alternatives properly. We are around 40 sites, MPLS plus internet plus a bit of cellular backup, mostly active-passive, policies are not exotic. The Viptela overlay itself has been great, my pain is the cost, the licensing circus and pushing everything onto a platform that stopped feeling like it is going anywhere. If you moved off Viptela or stayed and went to Catalyst SD-WAN, what did you get to and what caught you out in the migration?

  • “They've dramatically simplified the licensing on the 8000-G2 series. You're paying for SD-WAN Essentials or Advantage - that's it. No more DNA licensing or throughput caps.”

  • “Cisco doesn't want you to go Catalyst 8000 - they want you to go to the Cisco 8000 Secure Routers. The Catalyst 8000s have been announced EoL just recently and the 8000 Secure Routers (G2s as they are often referred to) were announced in June of '25 at the San Diego Cisco Live. Go to ciscolive.com and look for a presentation "Powering the Secure WAN of the Future with Cisco 8000 Series Secure Rout”
