Hi all, Unfortunately, my full post about this was deleted from this subreddit... So I'll keep this as short as possible so that this doesn't get deleted. Anyway, some of you may like to know that ChemSketch has now officially been killed by Revvity (the owners of ChemDraw who recently bought ACD/Labs, which owned ChemSketch).

Also quoted as evidence

  • [comment u/lblb_lblb] I posted that Revvity, which now owns ChemDraw, bought ACD/Labs and that this could potentially lead to the free ChemSketch software being annihilated... Which has now happened!

  • “Dont worry. There is currently a huge push building up in academia and industry to move away from revvity due to their predatory pricing model. Even longtime partners are pulling out.”

  • “Honestly a bit ridiculous that everyone seems to be fine with what revity is doing. Chemdraw is literally just a fancy vector graphic editior with useful macros. The main part why they can keep their monopoly is the very intransparent cdxml file format that has become industry standard but with how it is going it is just a question of time till someone makes an open source clone.”

  • “I’ve kept a ChemDraw license since I don’t know when. I think I’ll need an alternative for the future, more importantly as I’ll be teaching in a place where it won’t be available and I won’t ask students for a paid software. I’ll stay here just in case.”
