What next from Trauma?

What happened

A Stryker trauma sales representative, after nearly four years in the role, is seeking a career change due to the demanding on-call schedule and poor work-life balance, despite high compensation.

Currently going on year 4 as a Stryker trauma rep. I lead a fairly large team of reps in a well developed territory. OTE is handsome but work life balance is becoming too much for me with a baby on the way. I can see a path to management in trauma if i stay and tough it out but there’s no telling how long that could be. Work and schedule intensity don’t matter to me as long as I’m able to give up majority of the “on call” aspect of my current role, OTE would be the only other deciding factor here. Open to division/company changes as well as rep roles or looking at management. Where should I look to next?

  • “Capital is very different sell, trauma reps (I am one) are used to more of relationship sell. They doesn’t mean you can’t do it. I would look to get out of ortho into CV or EV, you will take a short term hit on comp but long term way better. Styker instruments is the best job in ortho as far as pay and work life balance if you can get that gig”

  • “There is life outside of titanium. I moved to biologics and tissues, and it’s been awesome. No on call (was Stryker and then Synthes for over a decade), no weekends, and comp is north of 300 if you’re working your territory.”

  • “I left trauma and am now in capital. Best decision you can ever make. May take longer to jump up into leadership roles but you honestly may not want to get into leadership because you’ll be making great capital money and hardly have to work. You’ll have to sell yourself heavily in interviews though as lots of hurling managers didn’t look at Trauma or implant sales as a real sales job”
