  • [comment u/crazy-iwascrazyonce_] UNSW has built similar interactive tools (immersive technology lab). It runs on the Unity Game Engine and is probably a lot simpler than using blender

  • [comment u/Sexy_Koala_Juice] I’ve set up something extremely similar to what you’re thinking of doing, and I would try and find your models online, and then use Unity to make it interact the way you want.

  • “I always wanted an opportunity to do something like this. I don't mean to scare you, but it will be a lot harder than what you're imagining right now. You will want to get your model into Blender first, I recommend exporting it as a STEP file and using STEPper_NEXT addon to import to Blender (shameless plug, I maintain it). Then you will want to start combining objects. Keep anything that move”

  • “The other massive consideration should be maintenance. It's one thing to build it, it's another to maintain it. Any changes to parts or asset operating procedures need to be pushed through so the training maintains currency. Build for sustainability.”

  • “I worked with a company in Australia that did that for trains, and large mining trucks”

  • “FYI, as an intern, I know there’s an urge to do everything yourself, and prove your worth, but that’s not always feasible, especially if you’re on a deadline. I’ve set up something extremely similar to what you’re thinking of doing, and I would try and find your models online, and then use Unity to make it interact the way you want. With AI these days you could whip up a really quick prototype”
