We run a services business with clients in the US and every month they wire payments to our Indian bank account and it's not complicated work, should be simple. but after tracking everything a couple days ago, the fees we paid for a year was about $800 in SWIFT between us and our clients, lost $12k to $20k in fx spread and had 30 to 40 working days where money was either stuck in transit or held at the AD bank and anything above $100k our AD bank held for 7 to 14 days for FEMA classification and there was nothing we could do to speed it up. on a $200k incoming transfer the spread vs mid market was $3000 to $6000 and you can't see the markup because it's just part of the rate the bank gives you that day. We asked our RM about it once and he basically gave me a take it or leave it offer. We moved our clients to a setup where we can see the rate before the money moves and settlement is same day and I know I should've done it earlier but if you're receiving international payments regularly just track what you're actually losing for one year. it hurts seeing that much money just getting lost in the fees.

  • “Honestly this is total BS, and possibly a marketing ploy for something you sell. Banks are super competitive, I have no where close to volumes you mention yet I pay 10 paise on every dollar via regular banking channel.”

  • “I think you might be approaching it the wrong way. One option could be to set up a company in the UAE and receive the payments there, then transfer the funds to India. That way, you would only have to deal with one company, which could act as the parent/subsidiary structure, and you can ask your bank about their trade portal to make the process easier. It’s mostly a matter of having the right do”

  • “In terms of banks I know IOB provides the best FX rates and HDFC the worst. So you might want to look into that.”
