EVERETT - Two years after Pfizer announced plans to "wind down construction" at a huge manufacturing facility in south Everett, a global life science real estate developer has acquired and leased the property to a biopharma company. On Friday, Breakthrough Properties, a real estate investment firm specializing in biotech, pharma and academic research clients, announced it had acquired the 215 Shuksan Way facility for $78 million, according to a press release. The firm also secured a 21-year lease for the 270,000-square-foot campus with a global biopharma company to create a U.S. manufacturing facility. Breakthrough Properties was unable to disclose the company as of Friday. Biopharmaceuticals are drugs developed from organisms or living cells to treat a wide range of diseases. In April 2022, Seagen, a Bothell-based biotech company that Pfizer acquired in 2023, announced plans to build the Everett facility with the goal of manufacturing medicine for clinical trials and the commercial market. When Pfizer backed out, an unnamed Pfizer spokesperson told The Daily Herald in a 2024 email that the 120 or so employees, who were working as the plant was built, "will be impacted," but didn't confirm if that meant they'd be laid off.
